Social Glimpses from the Modern History of Iraq stands among the most important large-scale intellectual projects of Ali al-Wardi. In this monumental work, Al-Wardi brought together historical investigation and sociological interpretation in order to understand Iraqi society across its long development. His central premise is that the present cannot be understood without tracing the historical forces that shaped patterns of behaviour, systems of values, and structures of social life.
Through this project, Al-Wardi introduced a new method of writing history from a social perspective. Rather than recounting events in a traditional narrative form, he interpreted them according to their impact on communities and on the formation of collective mentality. This approach marked a significant departure within modern Arab historiography.
Although the title may suggest a focus limited to Iraq, the actual scope of the work is considerably wider. The study extends to the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, as well as Iran and Turkey, regions whose historical interactions played a decisive role in shaping Iraqi realities.
The series covers the period from the beginning of the sixteenth century, around 1500 CE, to the mid-twentieth century. It addresses the Safavid and Ottoman eras and the political and social transformations associated with them, examining how these developments influenced cultural and institutional life across the region.
The work was published between 1969 and 1979 in six parts distributed across eight volumes:
Part I in 1969; Part II in 1971; Part III in 1972; Part IV in 1974; Part V in two installments in 1977 and 1978; and Part VI, whose first section appeared in 1978, followed by a supplement in 1979.
Today, the series remains indispensable for readers and scholars seeking to understand the social history of Iraq and its wider environment. It continues to serve as a foundational reference in academic research and intellectual debate.
Iraqi sociologist, philosopher, and one of the most influential Arab intellectuals of the 20th century.
